Blower Door Tests
Many professional energy auditors will perform a simple blower door test to help determine a home’s airtightness. This test helps to identify air leakage, moisture condensation problems, and contamination caused by indoor air pollution.
A blower door is a powerful fan that mounts into the frame of an exterior door. The fan pulls air out of the house, lowering the air pressure inside. As a result, the higher outside air pressure flows in through the home’s unsealed cracks and openings. Then the auditors use an instrument to detect air leaks. These tests determine the air infiltration rate of the structure.
Once the leaks are identified, the areas should be caulked or resealed to help maintain proper insulation in your home.
