Michigan really needs our help! Each year the state sends out over $28 billion to other states and countries to import the energy that we need to run our homes, schools, and industries. Michigan imports most of its energy from other states and nations, including:
- 100% of its coal and nuclear fuel
- 97% of its petroleum
- 80% of its natural gas
These imports account for about 70 cents of every dollar spent for energy by Michigan’s citizens and businesses. The total coal use in Michigan in 2007 was 38.5 million tons of which 98% was used to generate electricity. Michigan spent a total of $37 billion on all forms of energy in 2007 and of that amount over $28 billion was for the energy resources imported from other states and nations.
Over the past few years, energy prices have gone up, and this year we will see utility rates rise again. With incentives available to Michigan homeowners for energy efficient upgrades, now is the right time to make your home more energy efficient and reduce our states need for imported energy.
